The Szarvas Region covers an area of 485 km2, has 6 settlements and a population of 25,000. The town of Szarvas has nearly 17,000 inhabitants and is located in the North-Western corner of Békés County, 50 km from Békéscsaba, the county seat, and 150 km from Budapest. The settlement is on the left bank of the Hármas-Körös also known as the Western Gate of Békés County. The city occupies one third of the territory of the Szarvas district, and its population ratio is about 60% of the district.
The city can be easily reached by the M44 motorway.
There are many administrative bodies and branches of the Békés County Government Office in Szarvas, such as: Land Registry, Health Insurance Financial Administrative Body, Food Chain Safety and Animal Health Administration (FDA), Labor Center Branch, Public Health Administrative Body, Pension Insurance Administration Outsourced Customer Service.
The proportion of those with a primary school education (38%) and those with higher education increased almost two and a half times (15%). At the same time, it is important to mention that the proportion of secondary school graduates also changed in a positive direction, the proportion of those without or having a high school diploma increased by almost 6%.
Secondary institutions operate in Szarvas, as well as the Tessedik Campus of the Faculty of Economics, Agriculture, and Health Sciences of Szent István University (Tessedik Sámuel college).
In the city of Szarvas, the indicators related to employment show proportions similar to the national and county picture. 39% of the total population was employed, and 5.50% of those of active age were registered as jobseekers. The proportion of unemployed people with qualifications, especially graduates, has increased.
With the establishment of the Irrigation Research Institute and the Fish Farming Research Institute (the two research institutes operate together under the name HAKI), as well as the Tessedik Campus of the Gál Ferenc University, Faculty of Pedagogy and Faculty of Economics, Agriculture and Health Sciences of Szent István University, Szarvas became one of the intellectual centers of Békés County.
From an economic point of view, it functions as an important regional center and has a long history of food industry and metal industry, and nationally recognized products and brands can be associated with the name of the city, such as „Szarvasi” Coffee Machine.
Cultural and gastronomic tourism plays an increasingly important role in the city, high-quality programs ensure the entertainment of tourists coming to the region from spring to autumn. The unique Water Theatre, which was opened in June 2011 on the shores of Holt-Körös river and can accommodate nearly a thousand people, is outstanding.

Szarvas and its surroundings is extremely rich in natural beauty in relation to the Great Plain, but at the same time, there are no industrially usable raw material sources or mines in the region, only local material extraction sites. The area is rich in geothermal energy, which has been exploited for more than forty years. Initially, it was used to operate beach baths, but in addition to these, it is now also used to heat agricultural facilities and buildings in and around Szarvas.
Three quarters of the businesses operating in the Szarvas district are located in the city. Two large enterprises operate in the settlement: Gallicoop Pulykafeldolgozó Zrt., which deals with turkey processing and has a history of more than 30 years, and CORTEVA / formerly Pioneer Hi-Bred Kft., which specializes in seed production / the latter is the plant with the largest capacity in this industry in the world.

Industrial Park has been operating in Szarvas since the year 2000. The area is bordered by main road No. 44 and Orosházi road. It is 100% owned by the municipality. Significant developments have taken place in the park area in recent years. Its area is 59.9 hectares, of which 52.6 hectares are built-up areas, where 51 companies operate.
Tourism is the defining segment of the city's economy thanks to the favorable conditions and the diverse tourist product range based on it, as well as the conscious and active development activity in this direction over the past 20 years.
Szarvas is located on the Mezőtúr - Battonya railway line. The single-track railway, served by diesel traction, belongs to the group of regional railways. Passenger traffic can use the rail service based on a regular schedule.
In terms of airport connections, Liszt Ferenc International Airport can be reached at a distance of 140-165 km, depending on the route chosen, and Airport Debrecen is also at a similar distance.
The railway station, with a total of three main tracks, two loading tracks and one loading-section track, is located 20 km from Mezőtúr station and 42.1 km from Orosháza station.
In order to strengthen the local economy and preserve its prosperity, it tries to support businesses operating and settling in the city by continuously developing the city's business infrastructure, such as expanding its industrial park as needed, and operating an incubator house. In addition to all this, the city is committed to the increased use of renewable energy sources, and in the area of economic development, it also supports the establishment of businesses based on the utilization of renewable energy. (e.g.: biogas plant, planned implementation of a solar collector production plant, increased thermal water utilization, increased geothermal energy utilization.), takes conscious steps in order to become a model settlement for cities with similar characteristics.
