Sister Cities

Szarvas has the following 8 sister cities. Closer relationship with the sister cities emerged after the political changes of 1989.

 

Keuruu

Signature of the sister city contract: 1990.

It is located in the Western part of Finland, with a population of 12,000, with an area of 1430 square kilometers, of which 170 square kilometers are water surface. There are altogether 316 lakes in Keuruu. The largest of them is Keurusselka, where passengers are transported by a nostalgic steamer. The city is home of the oldest church in Central Finland and there is a railway museum located on 7 hectares.

Since the beginning of the contacts, former journalist Olli Haapanen, now retired, is one of the most active members of the relationship. He is the driving force behind it.

In Keuruu works the Finnish-Hungarian Friendship Society, who has visited several times our city and regularly receives groups from Szarvas.

In the framework of several photo exhibitions, the cities introduced each other to the public. Delegations participate in cultural and gastronomic festivals of its counterparts.

 

Poprad

Signature of the sister city contract: 1990.

Poprad is one of the most important economic and cultural centers of Central Slovakia. It is also the starting point for the tourism in Tatra Mountains. Today's Poprad was founded by the unification of four individual small towns Szepesszombat, Felka, Sztrasza and Mateóc.

Prior to the signing of the official sister city contract, significant contacts existed between the two towns, the Slovak Primary School and Kindergarten, the Evangelical Church and the Slovak Cultural Association.

Participation on a number of occasions was organized by both cities for reciprocal introductions and tourism festivals.

The Szarvas people are reluctant to travel to Poprad because of the winter sports, and those there are happy to come to Szarvas with the many opportunities offered by summer.

 

Szilágysomlyó / Simleusilvaniei

Signature of the sister city contract: 1991.

Szilágysomlyó is located in Romania, in Szilágy / Simleu County. The settlement is located on the slope of the Magura mountain, on the banks of the Kraszna river at the bottom of its embankments. It is a village with lot of beauty, the birthplace of the Báthori princesses. It is the organic part of Partium, the cultural center of the area and the home town of the Szilágyis.

Its historical building are the ruined but continuously restored Báthory Castle and the the wonderfull Calvinist church with a cassette ceiling.

The formerly Hungarian majority population has now fallen below 20 per cent. There is a Hungarian elementary school and two high schools teaching Hungarian classes. Hungarian consciousness is preserved by the Báthory Foundation with its cultural activities, the cultivation of the Báthory cult. Its annual celebration is the Báthory Days series, which is regularly attended by the Szarvas people.

The relationship was raised by a delegation from Szarvas during the Romanian Revolution in 1989.

 

Szentegyháza / Vlăhiţa

Signature of the sister city contract: 1994.

Szentegyhaza (Romanian: Vlăhiţa) is located in Romania, Transylvania, Harghita County.

The city is halfway between Székelyudvarhely (Odorheiu Secuiesc) and Csíkszereda (Miercurea Ciuc) in the southern front of Central Harghita mountains. With its 860 m height it is the town of the highest position in Harghita County.

The relationship started with the support of a Family living int he sister city, that had a road accident in Szarvas, which then expanded into a sister city relationship.

Cultural cooperation started with the Szentegyházi Children's Philharmonic Orchestra, that consists of a 120-member choir and a 20-member band. They rewarded the Hungarian Heritage Prize and Szarvas presented the Public Education Prize for them.

Arts groups are exchanged on each-others festivals, on the Plum Days of Szarvas, the Narcissus Festival, the Autumn Campaign and the City Days of Szentegyháza.

There are a lot of civic associations, families and friends who also have living contacts between the two cities.

 

Barót / Baraolt

Signature of the sister city contract: 1996.

The city is located in Covasna County, in the middle of the Baróti Basin crossed by the Barot Stream, with a total population of 10,000. Once it was a significant mining town, now is trying to exploit tourism opportunities after the closure of the mines.

Since the beginning of the contacts cultural, touristic, economic and trade relations have been established.

The presence of delegations are regular and reciprocal in major events of the two settlements.

With the opportunities offered by cross-border contacts, several economic and civil associations have concluded a cooperation agreement and are working together on joint projects.

 

Malacky

Signature of the sister city contract: 2000.

The town with 18,000 inhabitants is located in Slovakia.

The city is already listed as a settlement in 1206 in the Diploma of King András the 2nd, when the king donates its loyal supporters lands in this area.

The relationship was initially a sporting relationship, our football fans were happy to participate in each other's competitions and tournaments.

Today cultural and touristic links are stronger.

 

Wuxi

Signature of the sister city contract: 2009.

The history of the city is already 3000 years old. The city is located in Southern China, 128 kilometers Northwest of Shanghai. It has an area of 4758 square kilometers, with more than 4.5 million inhabitants.It was one of the busiest harbor towns and textile centers in the 18th century.

At present, it is a 6 million people metropolis, which contributes significantly to the Chinese GDP.

The relationship was first established between the Fishery Research Institute of our city and a similar institute in Wuxi. This rose later to the sister city level.

The relationship between the Research Institutions is continuing and expanding. Due to the large distance, the contact development is slower in terms of cultural, touristic and economic relations.

 

Bucine

Signature of the sister city contract: 2010.

The city is located in Italy, in the Northern part of Arezzo, in the valley of the River Arno. The Tuscan town is made up of several smaller settlements, with a population of 10,000.

In the countryside olive cultivation and pressing, vineyards, other agricultural activities and tourism give a decent livelihood for people.

The major event for the city is the "Bucine Flowers" festival in every year on the last weekend in May, featuring all the Italian provinces, as well as several European and Asian regions.

This event is part of the annual presentation of Szarvas with music, folk dance, gastronomy and handicrafts.
